Swelling (Edema)

When the size of the inner or outer organs of the body starts growing or spreading in them, it is the form of swelling. Swelling in medical language is known as Edema.

 Swelling usually occurs from the result of the accumulation of fluid at some place. It can also be caused by irritation or pain of the body. Swelling can also happen inside the body, and can affect the skin as well.

 There are many situations that can cause swelling. Due to insect bites, diseases or injury etc. the skin may swell. Inflammation in the internal parts of the body is mainly due to the side effects of any medication or any serious injury.

 If you are experiencing acute and abnormal swelling, then show the doctor immediately. Especially if your weight is increasing and your pain is becoming unclear with swelling, show the doctor as soon as possible.

 Types of Swelling.

 1. Peripheral edema: Usually it affects the feet and ankles, but it also happens in the sides. This is the most common type of swelling. Problems in circulatory system, kidney or lymph nodes are the main reasons.

 2. Pedal edema: This happens when the fluid gets accumulated in the lower part of the leg. Inflammation of feet in the elderly and in pregnancy is the most common. Pedal edema can be difficult to shake the affected area, as you may have numbness.

 3. Pulmonary edema: When the fluid is gathered in the air sacs in the lungs then Pulmonary edema develops. It can cause difficulty in breathing, and its condition may get worse after lying down. It may feel heartbeat fast and suffocating, and frothy spit and many times blood can come together.

 4. Lymphedema: Swelling in the arms and legs is often due to damage to your lymph nodes. It can also be caused due to damage to tissues that help in filtering bacteria and waste. The injury or damage caused to it is often due to the consequences of radiation and surgery such as surgery for cancer.

 5. Macular edema: Macula is a light-sensitive tissue located in the middle of the retina. Macular edema occurs when the fluid in the damaged blood vessels located in the retina starts to leak after it has accumulated.

 6. Cerebral edema: This is a very serious condition, in which the fluid in the brain starts developing. The main reasons for its development include bleeding or blocking blood vessels inside the brain, having brain tumors, any kind of allergic reaction, severe head injuries etc.

 Symptoms of Swelling.

 Increased size of the skin or muscles in outer inflammation is usually visible. Although some other symptoms of inflammation, such as becoming fluid in the affected area of the body, can be difficult to detect early. If you have been swollen due to any illness, injury or insect bites, then you may experience many types of symptoms, such as:

  * stomach enlargement.
  * Itching
  * Feeling pain in the affected area
  * Vomiting

 With the help of an imaging scan, the increased size of internal organs, muscle or bone etc. can be seen. If swelling is not visible or there is inflammation in the internal body, then the following symptoms may be experienced:

  * Fatigue
  * Fever
  * Dizziness
  * Nausea
  * Insomnia
  * Pain
  * Flu like symptoms

 If you have swelling in the skin, spreading, shining in any part of the skin or by pressing the area of the skin with a finger, then it becomes a hole for a while, then show it to the doctor. If you see any of the following problems, get help from a doctor immediately:

  * Breathlessness

 These symptoms can be a sign of Pulmonary edema, which requires early treatment.

 If you have to sit for a long period of time, due to which the swelling or pain has developed in your legs, which is not properly cautious, talk to your doctor. The pain of persistent leg and swelling may be a sign of blood clotting in the veins.

 Causes of Swelling.

 The result of the pain in the bones, tissues or muscles or inflammation (the effect of the body's response to the injury or infection of the body, such as irritation and bloating) may be swelling in the outer part of the skin. Cyst and tumor may also have swelling near the affected area. It is an internal condition, however, due to the accumulation of fluid, but due to this the inflammation develops in the outer part.

 Some of the most common causes of external inflammation include:

 * Insect bite
 * Red spots
 * Hives
 * Getting hurt
 * fluid retention
 * Pregnancy
 * Menstrual
 * Hormonal changes
 * Infection.

 External inflammation can also remain stable and spread.

 Stagnant swelling is the condition in which inflammation affects only a particular area. For example, if a person has an infection in the eyes, then swelling is just around his eyes. Or if a person has been bitten by a pest, then swelling will be where the insect stings.

 The spreading swelling spreads to a large area of the body. This swelling is usually a sign of a serious illness. Generally this is due to liquid retention or allergic reaction. Other common causes for inflammatory inflammation include:

  * Kidney failure
  * Heart failure
  * Anaphylaxis (severe allergy)
  * Cutting through toxic worm

 People with sugar or some types of cancer may experience swelling on large part of the body or on some parts of the hands and feet such as fingers. This form of swelling can be seen from time to time.

 Inflammation inside the body can also be the result of inflamation in the internal organ, collecting fluid or stomach up etc. This form of inflammation can occur to patients of some internal diseases, such as diseases of the intestines and syndrome, Crohn's disease and cancer etc.

 Prevention of Swelling.

 How to prevent swelling?

 If a chronic (long-term) illness is causing the problem of inflammation, then the disease can be prevented by properly treating or by swelling for example. Medicines can also help if it is swollen due to pain and burning in the other part of the body.
